All undergraduate art majors are admitted to a common first-year program of study in the Department of Art. Required courses introduce theory and skills pertinent to all disciplines, along with discipline-specific issues.

Art students who meet the grade requirements at the end of their first year may select an area of specialization for their second through fourth years of study. Some areas, such as visual communication, require students to pass a portfolio review during the second year.

Learn more about our specialization areas, degree options, and degree requirements on our bachelor's degrees page.

First-Year Courses
Along with courses from the  University Core Curriculum, students in the first-year foundation program take courses in fundamental design, drawing, and a survey of art history. View first-year course descriptions.

Pre-Art Majors
Students who desire to become an art major but have not yet been admitted to the program may begin taking the first-year foundation courses as a pre-art major in order to develop a portfolio and meet  admission criteria for currently enrolled students. Pre-art majors are advised to begin courses during the spring or summer terms.

For complete information on degree requirements, please consult the Ball State University Undergraduate Catalog.
