Degree Overview
Students pursuing this degree are expected to develop and refine studio skills, education skills, and academic scholarship to a level of professional excellence. The graduate program enables students to:

• Work closely with studio faculty in well-designed facilities.
• Become an ambassador of the visual arts in school systems and communities.
• Enrich their lives with the traditions of the visual arts.

This program reflects the department's mission to educate students in developing significant ideas with the discipline of visual arts education and in mastering the tools and methods of inquiry for creating art. Creating art forms and teaching art are highly individualized activities that require an understanding of the four major activities related to art--perceiving, producing, knowing, and evaluating--that help students understand themselves and the world around them.
