Reclaim, Reuse, Renew
The artwork for this juried exhibition is based on the theme of sustainability or leaving a lighter footprint on the planet. The artworks will either conceptually or actually represent the reusing recycling, or reclaiming of materials. Four highlighted artists for this exhibition who are known for their work with post-consumer products are Michelle Stitzlein, Boris Bally, Leo Sewell, and Harriete Estel Berman. Stitzlein's Art Grange studio is located in Baltimore, Ohio and she has been featured on HGTV's show That's Creative for her innovative use of plastic bottle caps. Boris Bally's atelier is in Providence, Rhode Island and for some of his current work he re-uses traffic signs. Leo Sewell, of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, is a name fondly known to visitors of the Ball State University Museum of Art. Sewell's sculpture Man (c. 1970) is in the collection at the museum and has been a visitor favorite for almost two decades. The metalsmith Harriete Estel Berman is based in San Mateo, California and in her use of materials that are otherwise "destined for the trash" she "revitalizes the mundane."
