FACULTY LOADS AND ASSIGNMENTS
ASSIGNMENTS
Academic Year - The overriding concern in making faculty assignments to
instructional and other responsibilities is always the need to implement the basic curriculum and programs of Burris Laboratory School. The assignment of individual faculty to their teaching responsibilities shall follow the procedure outlined below:
- The Burris department chairperson and the faculty of a grade level or curriculum area will jointly confer on the staffing needs and schedule for that area or level.
- Assignments to specific courses and grade levels will then be made on the basis of:
2.1 primary certification
2.2 scheduling availability
2.3 years of experience at Burris teaching in that area
2.4 seniority teaching at Burris
Summer School - As with the academic year, summer school assignments will be made on the basis of the program needs of Burris Laboratory School. This determination must also include a consideration for meeting the pre-service needs of Teachers College and the constraints imposed by the state of Indiana's guidelines for the compensation of summer school programs.
1. The Burris department chairperson and the faculty of a grade level or curriculum area will jointly confer on the staffing needs and schedule for that area of level.
2. Teaching opportunities will be filled in the following order:
2.1 State of Indiana certification
2.2 Full-time tenure-track faculty
2.3 Faculty in the last five years prior to retirement
2.4 Seniority based on date of contract with Burris or by mutual agreement
2.5 Non-Burris teachers who meet qualifications
2.6 In situations where it is academically sound to retain a high school teacher for the entire course (the equivalent of two semesters) the Burris department chairperson and certified staff will jointly confer on those staffing needs.
3. Summer Enrichment Programs – When funding is available, teachers may be offered the opportunity to teach enrichment classes during the first summer session. These courses are supported by various state funds, grants and student fees and therefore are subject to the availability of these monies.
TEACHING LOADS
Recognizing that the faculty of Burris Laboratory School have major responsibilities related to pre-service teacher education; departmental, collegiate, and university committee assignments and other professional service; and to engage in scholarly activity and professional development; a typical instructional load is approximately equivalent of four clock hours daily. This must be approximate due to the need to schedule classes by clock hours in grades 6-12. With the approval of the Dean of Teachers College, loads may be adjusted through the assignment of non-teaching responsibilities to individual faculty members. Teaching and other assignments beyond the four clock hour normal load constitute an overload for which faculty will receive additional compensation.
In the event that overloads are necessary to staff and implement the programs of Burris Laboratory School, overload assignments will be jointly determined by the Burris department chairperson and the faculty eligible to teach the required overload. All things being equal, the overload assignment will be made according to the following priorities to the faculty member who:
1. has primary certification in the needed area
2. has scheduling availability
3. is most experienced in teaching that area
4. is the senior faculty member in terms of service at Burris
5. has not taught an overload most recently
Summer school loads at Burris Laboratory School will conform to the load definitions currently in use in the University and/or Teachers College.
