Travel/Field Study: ArkItalia: Celebrating 15 Years of ArkItalia
The celebrations of the 40th anniversary of CAP are also an occasion to take stock of ArkItalia, fifteen years after the first trip to Italy in 1990.  That trip set the basic format, which has been maintained for all the subsequent ArkItalia field study tours. The only major change in the program has been the Rome studio. Until 1999, the trip was sponsored by the cities where the studio was held, making the cost of travel very affordable.

Starting in 2001 the studio course was held in Rome during a three-week stay and the Rome studio has continued with CAPItalia in summer 2004 co-directed by Kevin Klinger. This summer Jonathan Spodek is running CAPItalia 2005 with a base near Como in northern Italy. ArkItalia/CAPItalia might be at a turning point and will probably change as the Architecture department moves on with the new curriculum. At the completion of this web site we will hopefully be able to outline the new directions of these field studies and their place in our professional program.

The web site will start with that first 1990 summer field study tour and two related studios (1990 and 1991) at CAP, and I will keep adding web pages for each ArkItalia year. The plan is to turn this into a publication by the end of 2005, which will present the studio work, the field studies, and the students and people who participated and supported this program. In that respect, the first 1990-91 chapter will recognize the extensive contribution of the city of Foligno to the foundation of the ArkItalia program.
