Assistantship Opportunities

Teaching/Research Assistantships

The purpose of graduate assistantships within the Department of Family and Consumer Sciences is to provide a degree of financial support to the graduate student for graduate study while contributing to the teaching and/or research mission of the department.  A full-time graduate assistant works 20 hours a week.

Applications are due March 1st of each year.  The application provides an opportunity for the applicant to identify the areas in which he/she has the most interest. The graduate assistant application may be found at Graduate Assistant Application

Apparel Design and Fashion Merchandising

  • APPAREL CONSTRUCTION AND COMPUTER APPLICATIONS LABORATORY – Graduate assistant provides assistance to students during open lab and assists instructors teaching the labs when needed.  Student keeps the construction and computer applications labs neat and assists in maintaining necessary supply inventory.  CONTACT Dr. Amy Leahy, aleahy@bsu.edu for more information.
  • BEEMAN HISTORIC COSTUME COLLECTION – Graduate assistant assists in managing museum collections and supervises an undergraduate student.  CONTACT Dr. Diana Saiki, desaiki@bsu.edu for more information.


Child Study Center

  • LEAD TEACHER POSITION teacher at the Child Study Center assigned to planning, preparing and implementing developmentally appropriate practice in activities with guidance and discipline.  Assignments include working with undergraduate students from the infant and toddler or child development class and practicum students who are assigned for laboratory participation as they are enrolled for these classes, and/or with employed students assistants.  CONTACT Mrs. Robin Box, rbox@bsu.edu for more information.
  • ADMINISTRATION POSITION-- Assistant responsible for budget and accounts receivable.  Assignments include keeping accurate records and balancing the budget.  CONTACT Mrs. Robin Box, rbox@bsu.edu for more information.


Food and Nutrition Area

  • FOODS LABORATORY – Full-time graduate assistant coordinates laboratory supplies, purchases, sets-up and maintains working order of the foods laboratories; graduate assistant also supervises undergraduate student employees.  CONTACT Mrs. Deborah Foster, dfoster@bsu.edu for more information.
  • QUANTITY FOODS LABORATORY – Graduate assistant is the second person in command of the quantity foods lab, which includes a student operated full-service restaurant.  Typical responsibilities include preparing and setting up food laboratories, ordering or buying food, working with undergraduate students in the lab and during the service of the meal.  CONTACT Dr. Lois Altman, loisaltman@bsu.edu for more information.
  • DIETETICS/NUTRITION – Graduate assistant provides assistance to nutrition faculty in all aspects of research and supervised practice experiences for dietetic technology students.  CONTACT Dr. Jo Carol Chezem, 00jchezem@bsu.edu or Mrs. Kimberli Pike, klpike@bsu.edu for more information.
  • COMMUNITY NUTRITION and RESEARCH – Assignments include developing and implementing community health and nutrition programs and assisting faculty in data collection and other research related activities.  CONTACT Dr. Carol Friesen, cfriesen@bsu.edu for more information.


Interior Design

  • INTERIOR DESIGN LABORATORY – a full-time graduate assistant helps maintain the interior design laboratories and studios, orders supplies, and assists faculty with teaching and/or research.  Graduate assistant will work with students in open studios.  CONTACT Mr. Reza Ahmadi, rahmadi@bsu.edu for more information.


Residential Property Management

  • RESIDENTIAL PROPERTY MANAGEMENT – graduate assistant provides assistance with the growing number of activities involving the Residential Property Management program and individual faculty who teach and/or conduct research in this area.  CONTACT Dr. Carla Earhart, cearhart@bsu.edu for more information.
