PUBLIC HISTORY INTERNSHIP PROGRAM

Guide to the Program

Prerequisites for Students

 

The following prerequisites apply to students who enroll in the History Option 2 (Public History Internship) major:

A minimum overall grade-point average of 2.75 / 4.0 (C+) is required before enrolling in the internship.  Students must also have received grades of at least C (2.5 / 4.0) in all completed history courses with a cumulative history grade-point average of at least 3.0 / 4.0 (B-).  Finally, the student must have completed 33 credit-hours in history, including the following seven required history courses:

History 151. World Civilization I: a survey of the development of world civilization from the dawn of civilization in Southeastern Asia and North Africa to the early modern world.

History 152. World Civilization II: a survey of the development of world civilization from the early modern world to the present.

History 201. American History, 1492-1876: a survey of the political, diplomatic, economic, cultural, and sociological forces and adjustments that have affected the history of the United States to 1876.

History 202. American History, 1877 to the Present: a survey of the political, diplomatic, economic, cultural, and sociological forces and adjustments that have affected the history of the United States since 1877.

History 240. Introduction to Public History: a survey of the field defined as the practice of history in a public setting primarily for a non-academic audience; offered every spring semester.

History 320. Laboratory Course in American History: the methodology of historical research and writing based on primary source documents; usually offered every fall semester.

History 445. History and Historians: historiography, the theory and philosophy of the historical discipline over time; usually offered every third semester.

The remaining hours are divided among courses in World (i.e., Europe, Africa, Middle East, Asia, and Latin America) history (3 credit-hours); U.S. history (6 credit-hours); and other history electives (3 credit-hours). At least 6 of these 12 credit-hours must be earned in courses numbered History 301 or above (in addition to History 320 and History 445).
