Student athletes in Elwood schools will now have to pay the district to play their favorite sports. In a unanimous vote on Thursday night, Elwood Community school board members approved a proposal to charge students who play on school teams. Like all Indiana schools, Elwood is facing budget reductions for the 2010-2011 school year. One sport will cost a student $50 a year. If they play a second sport, they pay an extra $25. A third sport is free. According to program rules, discounts will be given to families with multiple student athletes … and students in the free and reduced lunch program. At the meeting, no parents raised objections to the fee plan. School officials say they expect to bring in $3500 from athletic fees.
