Fire at Muncie’s former ABB Building

Delaware County officials say a Wednesday fire at the former ABB building on Cowan Road shouldn’t scare away a locomotive manufacturer who is taking over the location.  Fire crews were called to the former power transformer plant just after noon on Wednesday.  Flames could be seen shooting from the roof.  Muncie Fire Battalion Chief Terry Moore tells The Star Press that workers were using cutting torches on the roof.  The torches caught some insulation and plastic on fire.  He said the sparks also traveled through some duct work and ignited a wood beam underneath the building’s floor.  Moore says there was some structural damage, but not much water damage because of the building’s concrete floor.  Alabama-based Progressive Rail Services is leasing the building to make new diesel-electric locomotives.  Delaware County officials say the fire will affect the company’s schedule, but they can’t say how.
