State education officials agree tuition hikes can’t replace education funding

A panel meeting at Purdue University to discuss the future of public research universities agreed cuts to higher education can’t be solved by raising tuition and fees.  State Commissioner for Higher Education Teresa Lubbers says these schools play a critical role in the state’s economy by providing an educated workforce and bringing new ideas.  But she says a hike in tuition and fees would make a college education inaccessible to many.

Participants in the West Lafayette meeting say a new funding model is needed, but few offered concrete solutions.
