(INDIANAPOLIS) – A BAN ON TEXTING AT THE WHEEL TAKES EFFECT JULY 1, BUT IT MAY TAKE A LOT LONGER FOR HOOSIERS TO BREAK THE HABIT. TEXTING IS MORE THAN A SUBSTITUTE FOR PHONE CALLS OR EMAILS — IT‘S CHANGED THE WAY WE LIVE AND DRIVE. BUTLER UNIVERSITY PSYCHOLOGY PROFESSOR MANDY GINGERICH SAYS TEXTING HAS BECOME SO INGRAINED IT‘S ALMOST AN ADDICTION, AND THE PROSPECT OF A FINE OF UP TO 500 DOLLARS MAY JUST MAKE PEOPLE TRY TO HIDE WHAT THEY‘RE DOING. SHE SAYS THAT COULD JUST MAKE THE SAFETY CONCERNS WORSE.
