Indiana to apply for No Child Left Behind waiver

Indiana’s Department of Education says it welcomes President Barack Obama’s major changes to the No Child Left Behind Act.  The law requires all students to be proficient in math and reading by 2014 – a goal now widely seen as impractical.  DOE spokesman Alex Damron says the President’s offer of a federal waiver for states will allow for better growth data using Indiana’s measuring criteria.

The Department of Education has been preparing to apply for a federal waiver since they were first announced in August.  While the President is using his executive authority to issue the waivers, Damron says state education officials would have preferred Congress change the law instead.
