Ball State University has made a final decision not to renew charters for five Indiana charter schools. In January, seven schools were notified that Ball State was revoking their charters because of academic and overall performance. All seven schools originally applied for reconsideration. Two schools – Charter School of the Dunes in Gary and Timothy L Johnson Academy in Fort Wayne – then withdrew their requests.
Today, Ball State President Jo Ann Gora told the five remaining schools that after hearings with university officials and charter school leaders, Ball State will revoke their charters. University officials say the vote to revoke was unanimous and the decision is final. Hearing panel leader Melissa Rubrecht says the committee made recommendations in the best interest of the students, communities, and Ball State.
The five schools affected are:
Imagine Indiana Life Sciences Academy-East in Indianapolis
Imagine MASTer Academy in Fort Wayne
Imagine Schools on Broadway in Fort Wayne
The Kenneth A Christmon STEMM Leadership Academy in Richmond
LEAD College Preparatory Charter School in Gary.
