Governor signs tougher human trafficking laws bill

Indiana has strengthened its human trafficking laws ahead of the Super Bowl in Indianapolis. Governor Mitch Daniels signed the bill today. The legislation closes gaps in existing Indiana law, making it easier to prosecute human traffickers. Broadly stated, the bill says these are people who force or threaten someone into forced labor, involuntary servitude, marriage, prostitution, or other sexual conduct. Past Super Bowls in other states have experienced a spike in these crimes around the event. Indiana law enforcement currently says there’s been no apparent increase in this state. Daniels, when signing the bill, says he hopes putting the law in place will be a deterrent to traffickers.
