Legislators discuss salary caps for school superintendents

This summer, a committee of Indiana legislators is considering whether to set a cap on school district superintendents’ salaries. The average superintendent salary is between one hundred ten and one hundred fifteen thousand dollars a year. Auburn Senator Dennis Kruse says that’s more than the salary of state schools superintendent Tony Bennett.
Dennis Brooks is a senior advisor to the state Department of Education. He says local school corporations should be able to control what they will pay their top officials.
The proposed cap didn’t have much vocal support at today’s hearing. The lawmaker who introduced the issue did not attend and no one spoke in favor of the cap. The committee will continue to study the issue throughout the summer.
