As part of the audition process for the Ball State School of Music, prospective undergraduate students are asked to take two placement exams:
- piano placement exam
- sight-singing/ear-training placement exam
These exams are designed to determine each student's proficiency level in these skills. They are for placement within our program only and are not part of the decision process to gain acceptance to the program.
For the piano exam, students are asked to perform, if possible, a short repertoire selection that demonstrates their current piano ability level. Proficiency in functional and technical skills such as scales, chord progressions, sight-reading, melody harmonization, transposition, improvisation, and score-reading also will be assessed.
For complete information on program requirements, please consult the Ball State University Undergraduate Catalog or contact the Coordinator of Undergraduate Programs in Music.
