University Singers enjoying national television exposure (3/25/2004)
Members of Ball State University's critically acclaimed performance ensemble are enjoying national television exposure as a result of a recent trip to California.

While on tour in the Los Angeles area during spring break, the University Singers participated in the taping of a morning worship service at the Crystal Cathedral in Garden Grove, Calif.

The service was aired March 21 on the "Hour of Power." The students sat in the first three rows and were identified during the program.

Also, University Singer's member Dusty Miller, a senior from Carthage, won $10,500 in cash and a watch valued at $2,995 during a taping of "The Price is Right." The CBS television network show is scheduled to be broadcast March 31.

Known as Indiana's Official Goodwill Ambassadors, the ensemble spent spring break performing at Disney's California Adventure, several Los Angeles-area high schools, and touring television and production facilities in Hollywood.

"We visited the area in order to spread the good word about Ball State, to have our students perform and entertain in a different setting, network with alumni working in the entertainment industry and learn more about the industry by watching shows," said Jeffrey Carter, the ensemble's faculty conductor

"It was a very positive visit, and Ball State's name was spread over several southern California counties," he said. "We took our title as Indiana's Official Goodwill Ambassadors very seriously. I think we've laid the groundwork for a more extended tour one of these days."

The University Singers performed two full shows at large high schools, playing to enthusiastic crowds, he said.

"More importantly, we made personal, friendly connections with high school students," Carter said. "We've already received e-mail from several students requesting more information about Ball State and the University Singers."

Over the past 40 years, University Singers has earned recognition as one of the nation's top collegiate entertainment organizations. The group has performed all across the nation and in dozens of countries since forming in 1964. They have also appeared on recordings, radio and television.
