The gift from Doris Heckler Kloss, a former Selma resident who died in 2004 at 89, will go to the University Scholars, a program that provides incoming freshmen with a four-year commitment of financial support. The merit scholarship program is available for students possessing exceptional academic abilities and leadership potential.
"Doris was very much interested in giving to Ball State so talented students could get an excellent education," said Don Black, a friend of Kloss and executor of her estate. "She was very pleased to know that her money was going to a good cause."
Kloss was born in Sharon, Pa., and moved to Muncie in 1962 with her husband, Gerald A. (Chick) Kloss, who preceded her in death.
