Construction continues on the new Communication and Media Building, which is scheduled to open in summer 2007.
Lowe said additional construction will be limited to work on existing structures, including roof work at Burris and Lucina Hall and masonry work on a number of campus buildings. Repair to parking lots and the upper levels of the Emens and Student Center parking structures will also take place over the summer.
One high-profile project will be the construction of a pedestrian crosswalk and median between the Student Center and the Administration Building on University Avenue. Construction will take place May 8-27.
The safety improvement will include the removal of the flashing light currently in place over University Avenue, said Lowe. Vehicular lanes will be reduced to one in each direction with the construction of the median. The design will be similar to the medians and crosswalks found along the new section of McKinley Avenue between Riverside Avenue and Petty Road.
"The campus has matured to the point where we need to make these changes," Lowe said. "We have a high volume of pedestrian traffic and we still have a high volume of vehicular traffic, so we'll continue to make these safety improvements as we work through other areas of campus."
Work continues on the Communication Media Building, which is being constructed between the Robert Bell Building and the Ball Communication Building. It is scheduled to be completed by summer 2007.
The East Residence Hall, which is being built immediately north of the DeHority Halls Complex, continues to take shape. In addition to the residence hall, there are plans for the renovation and expansion of the currently closed Woodworth Dining Facility on the same site. That project is scheduled to begin this summer.
