The fund will support academic activities, scholarships, conference travel and research that expand the understanding of soil and water conservation.

The gifts were provided by Donald and Lorna Van Meter, of Eaton, and Jane Hardisty, of Zionsville.

Donald Van Meter is an associate dean of the College of Sciences and Humanities and a professor of natural resources and environmental management. Lorna Van Meter is a former high school Latin teacher and Ball State history professor.

Hardisty is Indiana's state conservationist for the Natural Resources Conservation Service.
