Although Holmes Finch has been a Ball State faculty member for only four years, he has already emerged as a leader in his department. During this time, he has published 14 manuscripts in refereed journals, had 10 more accepted for publication, submitted eight others now in review and made 50 presentations at national conferences.

In addition to his scholarly writing, he has applied his skills in research design and statistical analyses to grant projects and to evaluation programs of students and faculty alike. These contributions were recently recognized when he was named director of research in the Office of Charter School Research.

In addition, he is currently serving on 40 doctoral and master's level committees in various departments across the university. His service to students was the impetus for two graduate students to begin work on nomination materials for the Outstanding Teaching Award until they learned that he was already nominated for this award.

The following is an excerpt from a letter they had drafted: "Dr. Finch is one of the finest instructors we have encountered in our combined years of formal education. He explains even the most difficult course concepts in ways that the entire class, including students who have had limited exposure to statistics, can understand."

He also earns high praise from colleagues. One writes: "We would be remiss not to mention what a pleasure it is to work with him as a person. He is congenial, self-effacing and accessible. It is an honor to have him as a member of our department."

Today the university honors him also with the 2006-2007 Outstanding Junior Faculty Award.
