Journalism banquet honors alumni, professionals (4/4/2000)
MUNCIE, Ind. - The Ball State University Department of Journalism honored outstanding achievement in journalism and communications at its annual awards luncheon March 30.

Christine Evans of The Palm Beach Post, received the Eugene S. Pulliam National Journalism Writing Award for her story on Shaken Baby Syndrome, "Why Gabbi is Gabbi." Before joining The Post in 1995, Evans worked as a reporter and editor in Dublin, Ireland, Cincinnati and at The Miami Herald. Evans has won the Sigma Delta Chi Award from the Society of Professional Journalists.

The 26th inductee into the Ball State University Journalism Hall of Fame is Jon Hughes, who completed his bachelor of science in 1967 and master's in journalism in 1972 at Ball State. Hughes is a professor of English and journalism at the University of Cincinnati and has been a prolific writer and photographer for several decades.

The National Public Relations Achievement Award Winner is John Paluszek, former president of the Public Relations Society of America (PRSA), current president of Ketchum Public Affairs, and co-chair of the International Interdisciplinary Commission on Public Relations. In 1992 Paluszek was chosen as Public Relations Professional of the Year and in 1994 received the Gold Anvil Award.

Harris G. Siegel received the Majeri Award for Innovation and Leadership in Graphic Journalism. Siegel is known as an outstanding journalist and editor of news design. A graduate of Syracuse University, he has received more than 30 Society for News Design awards for his design of sports pages.

North Central High School in Indianapolis received the Scholastic Journalism award for their coverage of a North Central High School student's trial for the murder of a minister and his wife. The award recognizes the exceptional reporting and dedication of the students as well as their adviser, Christopher Martz, who graduated from Ball State in 1994.

Ethan Miller received the Joseph Costa Award for his award-winning courtroom photography. Miller's award-winning photograph shows a woman being restrained by bailiffs after she attacked the defense attorney upon learning her son had been convicted of murder. Miller has won numerous awards from the Nevada Press Association and Society of Professional Journalists.

The Indianapolis Recorder received the Indiana Journalism Award for its significant contribution to the world of journalism. The Recorder was established by George Pheldon in 1895 to focus on news, events and African-American issues in Indiana. The Recorder has been a champion of civil rights since its founding.

David A. Haugh, a columnist on college and high school sports at the South Bend Tribune, received the Young Alumnus Award. Haugh graduated in 1990 and has served as assistant sports editor with administrative and editing duties since 1995. He was chosen as the 1999 Indiana Sportswriter of the Year by the National Sportscasters and Sportswriters Association.

Don Yaeger received the Journalism Alumnus Award for his outstanding achievement as one of the world's leading sports reporters. Yaeger has published eight books, two of which were New York Times bestsellers. Long honored for his investigative reporting, Yaeger is a past winner of the Young Alumnus Award. He graduated in 1984.

John E. Worthen, president of Ball State University, received a citation for his support of journalism and communications on the Ball State campus. Worthen retires in June after 16 years of service.

John Robinson and the House of White Birches publishing company received a citation for its commitment to the highest ethical and business standards in publishing. The House of White Birches is a book, magazine and catalog publishing company in Berne. It is Indiana's largest publisher of magazines and books.

Ron Lemasters received a citation for his years of service covering sports in east central Indiana for The Muncie Star Press. Lemasters has been a tireless supporter and observer of sports in the region.
