Do I have to pay to use the climbing wall?
No!! Climbing during open REC hours at the climbing wall is FREE!
Do I need to sign up ahead of time to use the climbing wall?
The climbing wall is open daily on a first come-first served basis. You don't have to sign up for a time or date, however, please realize that some days and times may be busier than others, and you may experience a short wait to get on the wall.
How much does it cost to rent equipment?
The equipment required for climbing-harness, belay device, and carabiners are FREE! Climbing shoes and chalk bags are available for rental for $2 per day and $1 per day, respectively. (Shoes and Chalk bags are free to try your first time at the rock wall)
Do you have to know how to belay to use the climbing wall?
No, your first time at the climbing wall, attendants are available to belay you. After your first time, we suggest taking our belay clinic to learn how to belay or bring a friend who is qualified belay the next time you come into the wall.
How do I learn how to belay at the climbing wall?
You can sign up for belay clinics at the climbing wall front desk. Your $15 payment is due at the time of registration and covers the cost of your clinic, which will last approximately an hour and a half. After completing the belay clinic, you will have learned the skills necessary to belay proficiently at the Climbing Wall.
I already know how to belay. Do I still have to take the belay clinic to belay at the climbing wall?
No, you can simply pay $5 and take the belay test; however, you will be expected to meet all of OP's belay standards without prompting or instruction.
I have my own equipment. Can I use it at the climbing wall?
You may use your own harness, climbing shoes, and chalk bag (NO LOOSE CHALK!). Personal hardware such as carabiners and belay devices are not permitted, but can be checked out for free.
How do I schedule a private rental of the climbing wall?
Private rentals of the climbing wall are available outside of open recreation hours. To schedule a private rental of the climbing wall, please contact Stephanie Reinhart, Assistant Director of Outdoor Pursuits. Private rental reservations must be made at least two weeks in advance.
Can I bring my friends or family who are not BSU Students to the climbing wall?
Yes! All your friends and family has to do is get a guest pass from the SRWC equipment room, which is $8 to gain access to any Recreation facility. Then harnesses, belay devices, and carabiners are free!
Is the climbing wall safe?
Our staff is rigorously trained to watch over the climbing wall, and our customers are also trained in the proper belay and safety practices. Outdoor Pursuits provides only top of the line equipment to its patrons to ensure a safe climbing experience. Rock Climbing is inherently dangerous, but if done properly and safely it can be an extremely fun sport.
How old do I have to be to use the climbing wall?
There is no age limit to use the rock wall but any child under the age of 18 does need a legal guardian's signature. In order to belay, participants must be at least 16 years of age.
Do I have to be a certain size to climb the climbing wall?
NO! All sizes are welcome to climb the wall. Outdoor Pursuits has equipment to fit all body types and needs.
What are the benefits to rock climbing?
It is a great full body muscle workout including arms, legs and core muscles. It also allows you to get away from the workout gym and meet new people in a great social atmosphere.
