Dr. Allan R. Albig, Indiana State University, Department of Biology, “What is the Matrix?: Microenvironmental Regulation of Tumor Angiogenesis” Tumors do not consist of tumor cells alone. Instead, tumors are heterogeneous collections of malignant and normal cells, abnormal hormone secretions, and many types of extracellular matrix molecules. Collectively, these elements constitute the tumor microenvironment. Microenvironments within tumors are “reprogrammed” to stimulate tumor growth and eventual metastasis. To design effective anti-tumor agents, we need to understand tumor pathophysiology, and this means understanding each component of the tumor microenvironment. Our lab investigates extracellular matrix molecules of the tumor microenvironment and how these molecules impact tumor growth and angiogenesis. This seminar will explore the tumor microenvironment and present our newest data describing how extracellular matrix controls cancer.
