Teaching Philosophy
Writing is a vital act, one that accomplishes a worthy goal for the
writer as well as the reader. My objective is to encourage students to
see themselves as writers who engage in meaningful discourse. To achieve
this, my course assignments are designed to build gradually on students’
developing rhetorical skills, so that the arguments they construct will
not only help them grow intellectually, but also contribute to the
discourse of the community they are trying to reach. My pedagogical
emphasis is on inquiry and discovery: Learning to ask questions about
the world; using the rhetorical process to discover answers to those
questions; then communicating that journey of discovery to a targeted
audience.
