  • Introducing our Study Abroad Advisor, Annika! Here to help your questions about Studying Abroad get answered, we thought we'd ask her a few of our own!

What is your favorite memory from your program?

Renting a boat with my friends on an exceptionally gorgeous summer evening and exploring the canals. The city is so different from the water.

What is your favorite part of your job?

I love seeing a student light up when talking about the study abroad program they are going on/went on! It makes me happy to see them get so excited about something I am passionate about.

What is one thing potential Study Abroad students should know?

The world is not as big and scary as you think it is. Also, that scary and different are not the same thing. Traveling, let alone traveling internationally, can seem very daunting because of cultural differences or physical space between you and your home. Once you are out in the world, I think it's easy to see that the things you may have thought were going to be scary are actually very manageable and that the differences you experience may end up being the best part of your journey

  • Meet Trent, our 2021-2022 Peer Advisor!

"I am Trent Seward, an honors graduate of Ball State University with a Bachelor of Art in Communication with a minor in Peace Studies and Conflict Resolution. Originally from Tipton, Indiana, I spent most of my time playing sports and partaking in academic clubs, gaming with friends, and being involved in my community. I enjoy taking life slow and value cooking, spending time outdoors, and getting into deep and intimate conversations with friends.
My time as a peer advisor was a little bittersweet, as I tried to vicariously live through the students I advised since my year abroad to Australia was cancelled due to the COVID-19 pandemic. As an interpersonal communications nerd, I loved working so closely with students. This job allows for you to meet new people every day and gives the peer advisor the opportunity to help others, which I adore. I will always reflect on my time as a peer advisor as a quality one, surrounded by a truly wonderful staff <3."

  • Meet John Jensen, Director of Study Abroad!

"I have been working in International Education for about 25 years, and have been at Ball State as the Director of Study Abroad since 2012. I was a first-generation college student, and didn’t give the idea of studying abroad a thought until a friend suggested it. That was in 1982! Since that time, I have not stopped exploring, and I have lived and worked on four different continents, and traveled around the globe.

My best tip for BSU students is to keep an open mind when considering a program. All global travel is challenging, and all global travel is rewarding. No matter where you go, you will have experiences that are unique, not just to the location, but to you personally, and you will carry these experiences with you forever. Studying abroad will change you; and remember, this is only the first step in your development as a global citizen. I have 40 years of experience to attest to that!"

    Stop in and say Hi!

  • Meet Kelly Kirkwood, Assistant Director of Study Abroad!

"I've been helping BSU students to study abroad since 2003. I'm a former Cardinal and alumna of the BSU London Centre, BSU Australia Centre, and a Faculty-Led field study in Jamaica. My best tip for BSU students is to think outside of the box when it comes to destination. Lesser known cities or schools can offer more immersive experiences at a fraction of the cost. The same goes for duration. A semester program can often be more cost-effective than a summer program when you compare cost/credit and availability of financial aid. We are happy to help prepare budget sheets to get you started."

  • Dom Caristi (Professor of Media) joined Ball State in 1998. He was awarded two Fulbright grants: in 1995 he taught at the University of Ljubljana in Slovenia, and in 2009 he taught at the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens in Greece. He has served as the Fulbright Program Adviser at Ball State since 2006, helping more than 30 Ball State students win Fulbright grants of their own. For six years he served as a Fulbright Alumni Ambassador, visiting 40 campuses to encourage other faculty to apply for a Fulbright. He currently serves on the Board of Directors of the Indiana Chapter of the Fulbright Association. Dr. Caristi will be retiring this summer. We are thankful for all his hard work while working with Fulbright at BSU!

    About Fulbright:
"The Fulbright Scholar Program is the flagship international educational exchange program sponsored by the U.S. government and is designed to increase mutual understanding between the people of the United States and the people of other countries. Participating governments and host institutions, corporations, and foundations around the world also provide direct and indirect support to the Program, which operates in over 130 countries worldwide."

Now that we have some new staff members at the Rinker Center, it's time to re-introduce our Study Abroad team! First up is our incredible Director of Study Abroad!

Ashley Coker (she/her) is incredibly passionate about not only the opportunities Studying Abroad offers, but also making those opportunities as exciting as possible!

Ashley's favorite part of the job is developing new programs that she knows that students will love. Her favorite memory from her own Study Abroad journey included riding a horse through ruins of a volcanic eruption in a tiny town called San Juan, Parangaricutirimicuaro.

If she could share one thing all students should know, it's that not all study abroad programs are high cost! In fact, some are VERY sumilar to the cost of a BSU semester. Students who study abroad CONSISTENTLY name it as one of the best decisions they made in college!

  • How do you pick a program when there are so many to choose from? Simple! Just book a 1 on 1 advising appointment with our Study Abroad advisors and we'll discuss options, answer your questions, and talk about any concerns you may have!

  • Dr. Barb Stedman, Director of National Scholarships, has helped nearly 150 Ball State students and recent alumni win scholarships to support study abroad! You could be next!

Some of these nationally competitive scholarships are fully funded programs—like the Critical Language Scholarship or U.K. Fulbright Summer Institute Award.

Others are simply scholarship dollars, to help students pay for programs that find through their department or the Study Abroad office—like the Gilman Scholarship, which is exclusively for Pell Grant recipients, or the Boren Scholarship, which funds study in non-western countries.

And still others—like Fulbright U.S. Student Awards—are for graduate study, research, or the chance to help teach English abroad after graduation.

Barb’s best advice for scholarship applicants is to plan far in advance and to work on building strong records in academics, leadership, and service.

  • Thank you to every one of our generous donors for helping to make this One Ball State Day our best ever! The Rinker Center for Global Affairs raised $3,005 in support of study abroad scholarships and the international student emergency fund. Way to go, Cardinal Nation!

Participants will do environmental conservation service work and learn about the local area for four days and have a free day in Gatlinburg.
