Elementary Education
This major prepares you to teach children age six to twelve as a licensed classroom teacher. You will complete pre-elementary education courses during the first two years of the program and then apply to be admitted to the teaching curriculum. During the last semester of the senior year, you will complete a full-time student teaching assignment. For more information about this major, visit the Department of Elementary Education. Serves as an initial investigation into teaching and the teaching profession. Participation in civic activities as a way of coming to understand children and various conditions that influence the teaching profession. May be repeated only once.
EDEL 200 - Planning for the Elementary and Early Childhood Classroom.
Ties direct classroom experience to seminar content. Emphasizes integrating, implementing, and interpreting laboratory experiences. Permission required. May be repeated only once. Prerequisite: completion of decision point 1; permission of the department chairperson.
EDEL 350 - Teaching in the Elementary Education Classroom.
Departmental themes concerning teaching and learning in elementary schools will be extended. Laboratory experience focuses on classroom instruction, organization, and management. Prerequisite: admission to the teacher education program; C or better grade in EDEL 300; permission of the department chairperson. Open only to elementary education majors. May be repeated only once.
EDPSY 260 - Human Growth and Development for Elementary Education.
Introduction to human development from birth through adolescence, emphasizing the preschool and middle childhood periods. Covers biological, cognitive, and social development as they apply to the preschool and elementary school settings. Not open to students who have credit in EDPSY 250. Open only to elementary and early childhood education majors.
EDPSY 393 - Educational Psychology for Elementary Education.
Study of the psychological principles underlying teaching, learning, thinking, behavior and motivation in preschool and elementary settings. Covers the theories, research, and assessment of these concepts and their application in schools. Not open to students who have credit in EDPSY 390. Open only to elementary education and early childhood education majors.
