- Ball State's Center for Media Design (CMD) was selected in 2008 to be a partner in a groundbreaking study of how individuals across the country consume traditional and emerging video platforms inside and outside of the home. The Institute for Digital Intermedia Arts, part of the Center for Media Design, won of the first $25,000 Blackboard Greenhouse Grant for Virtual Worlds for its Cinema Arts Project in 2008. The interactive technology of Second Life and the Blackboard course management system fosters an e-learning community. Achievement
- The Ball State College Bowl team in 2008 qualified for the national tournament by winning the Region 9 tournament at Southern Illinois University-Carbondale. Competitors were: Purdue University, Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology, Indiana University Purdue University-Indianapolis, Southern Illinois University-Edwardsville, Southern Illinois University-Carbondale, and Eureka College.
Environment
- Ball State's Council on the Environment (COTE) received the August 2007 Lugar Energy Patriot Award. COTE is the longest-standing green committee in Indiana's higher education community. Read more ...
- In 2008, Ball State joined more than 90 other higher education institutions to launch the Sustainability, Tracking, Assessment and Rating System (STARS), a national initiative to make campus life more sustainable. The Center for Energy Research/Education/Service has received awards from the U.S. Department of Energy, the National Wildlife Federation Renew America, American Institute of Architects, Sustainable Buildings Industry Council, and State of Indiana for its innovative programs and projects in environmental education.

- Building Better Communities is helping to develop the economy and enhance the quality of life in communities across Indiana. The effort receives specific funding support authorized by the Indiana legislature.
- Students may receive assistance in starting their own businesses through a business incubator program that fosters entrepreneurial activity in the community, particularly within the growing communications and information technology sectors.
- Ball State University Libraries was named the 2009 runner-up in the IGI Global Library Technology Excellence Recognition Program. IGI Global, an international publishing company, recognized the libraries' Digital Media Reposity. Offering 72 collections with more than 120,000 digital objects, it provides a centralized, coordinated, and user-focused resource.
- The Helen B. and Martin D. Schwartz Special Collections and Digital Complex at Bracken Library features cutting-edge technology. The complex houses a Microsoft Surface computer, digital learning pods with high-powered computers, the digital archives viewing room, and the digital newsstand, enabled to receive television broadcasts from around the world, including networks from Saudi Arabia, China, India, and Korea.
- Bracken Library, located in the heart of campus, offers more than 1.5 million volumes, professional librarians, and wireless connectivity.
