| On Oct. 2, middle school girls from 10 area schools attended Ball State's annual Math Day, sponsored by the Department of Mathematical Sciences, Office of the Associate Provost and Center for Gifted Studies and Talent Development. The theme of this year's event was "Math & Science: Tools You Need to Scale Tall Buildings." Ball State has sponsored the event since 1993.

|  | Students in Thomas Lauer's ichthyology study a parasitic species of fish known as the lamprey, a parasitic species of fish, during a recent lab visit to Buck Creek east of Muncie. Lauer, a professor of biology and director of the Aquatic Biology and Fisheries Center, said his students make several trips to local rivers and streams each semester, identifying dozens of species they find in the water using a technique known as electrofishing. The method stuns fish before they are caught and is a common survey method used to sample fish populations.
