Charles Shay

Mr. Shay served in Company F, 2nd Battalion, 16th Infantry Regiment. He was posted in the 1st Division in April 1943 as a medic. He served in the Big Red One through Normandy, the invasion of Northern France and Hurtgen Forest. He was captured in March 1945 by German soldiers in a small village in rural France and moved nightly because U.S. forces were advancing rapidly. They were returned to U.S. forces in April and he was shipped home to Boston. He's received the Silver Star and the POW medal.
