Young woman drawing in an empty studio

The School of Art offers a four-year, professional degree program leading to the Bachelor of Fine Arts (BFA) in Art.

Studio Art encompasses creative practices in ceramics, drawing, glass, metals + jewelry, painting, photography, printmaking, sculpture, video and new media. Students learn critical and conceptual thinking as they develop individual artistic voices across multiple media. Students pursue one of these nine studio areas of emphasis or craft their own interdisciplinary path.

Students begin with the First-Year Foundations Program which nurtures their interests and skills through classes in drawing, 2D, 3D, and 4D. Intermediate classes focus on developing practical skills in a variety of mediums and methods. Advanced courses center on building critical, theoretical, and professional competencies and expertise in distinctive studio practices. Seniors develop and install a thesis exhibition that provides them with an opportunity to showcase their work and learn behind-the-scenes skills for showing in professional spaces, galleries, and more.

Our diverse range of studio offerings emphasizes personal expression, technical skill, and critical analysis of ideas and problem-solving through making. In small classes with mentorship from expert faculty, students learn to develop concepts, understand historical and contemporary contexts for art, and how to write and present about their work.

Our Studio Art graduates are prepared for careers as professional artists, curators, designers, educators, critics, scholars, conservators, writers, and entrepreneurs. Students also go on to work as professionals in galleries, museums, and community organizations.
