I study learning in embryonic minnows (Pimephales promelas
) – at the egg stage, before they hatch. Previous research by our lab and others has shown that embryonic minnows are able to learn to make associations between known and unknown scent cues, which allows them to learn to recognize and respond to predators. Our recent research has also shown that minnows respond to scent cues differently depending on their social conditions. Our current work is examining whether or not embryonic minnows are able to learn socially from one another without direct experience making associations between scent cues.
