You’re invited to the first event of the 2024-2025 Teachers College Dean’s Lecture Series, taking place on Wednesday, November 13, from 3:00 to 4:00 p.m. in TC 1008. Dr. Lisa Ruble will present: “Bridging the Gap: Navigating Special Education Burnout and Building Resilience.”

Currently, approximately half of schools across the United States report teaching vacancies, with the most significant shortages in special education. Recruitment and retention challenges for special education teachers (SETs) have persisted for decades and have intensified in the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Burnout is the primary driver of the SET shortage. This presentation will outline the outcomes of a burnout intervention specifically adapted for SETs, utilizing an implementation-effectiveness and iterative development approach. The final intervention, BREATHE-EASE Goals, has been shown to significantly reduce emotional exhaustion among SETs while enhancing mindfulness and coping skills.
