Written by Nathan Alan Davis and directed by Dee Dee Batteast, ’07, the production follows 18-year-old Dontrell Jones III, who feels called to the ocean by a recurring dream. Believing he must seek out an ancestor lost during the Middle Passage, Dontrell prepares to embark on a journey that will connect him with a history that continues to echo in the present.
“Dontrell, Who Kissed the Sea is a story about the power of knowing where we come from and the lengths we’re willing to go to reclaim what history has taken from us,” said Ms. Batteast, instructor of theatre in the Department of Theatre and Dance “Through poetry, humor, and ritual, we follow a young man who feels called to uncover his family’s past, even when that journey takes him into the unknown. At its heart, this play is about family, identity, and the courage it takes to confront history while finding your own place in it.”
Dontrell, Who Kissed The Sea is presented by arrangement with Concord Theatricals on behalf of Samuel French, Inc.
