Research Focus: Sculptural and design based research into functional and domestic object making with a focus in woodworking and metalworking.
Potential Student Project(s):
Students will use basic woodshop and metal shop processes and equipment to aid in the design and creation of sculptural/functional domestic objects, as well as work to support the dissemination of these objects through social media and other channels. These tasks routinely could involve using a router, drill press, power and hand sanders as well as a variety of hand tools. These tasks may also include the use of angle grinders, welders, and hand tools in a metal shop. The work performed is physical in nature.
Attributes/skills/background sought in undergraduate:
The ideal student will be interested in learning about a variety of making and design processes, possess a positive attitude, and a solid work ethic. Prior experience in any areas is not required, but a willingness to learn is necessary. The student will be trained on all pertinent safety protocols
Mentoring Plan:
- You will meet weekly with me to discuss goals for the coming week, and what has been accomplished in the previous week. (two hours per week)
- You will receive training in the safe operation and use of a variety of metal and woodworking tools.
- You will gain insight to the process of the iterative design of objects in a sculptural/functional context.
- You will work directly with me to assist in the dissemination of these objects to a variety of venues via social media, galleries, and other outlets.
- You will work independently on assigned tasks to support the above and receive feedback and coaching on your work.
Students are expected to work 5h/week on the project, including 1h/week one-on-one meeting with mentor.
