Explaining the Organizational Chart

Ball State undergraduate students are most often advised by University College academic advisors stationed in academic colleges. For a full list of University College academic advisors, view the directory. Exceptions exist for students enrolled in the Honors College, student-athletes, and Ball State Online who are advised in their respective areas.

Academic advisors provide course recommendations to students that align with major and minor requirements and personal and career goals. Academic advisors also guide students in navigating their first-year of college, navigate course challenges through the alert process, and much more. A general timeline of academic advisor tasks can be viewed by clicking the link below.

Advisor Tasks

Navigate

Academic advisors are responsible for managing the Coursework Concern and Poor Test / Poor Quiz Grade alerts submitted for students on their caseloads. When these alerts are submitted, students automatically receive success consultation invitations from their academic advisors. Advisors work alongside students to develop a plan for success, often including guidance in communicating with their faculty, academic skill development, or referrals to services across campus. Faculty seeking detailed information on how their alert was satisfied they can reach out to the student’s academic advisor directly.

Please access the EAB Faculty Support Page for more progress reporting timeline and Navigate training materials for faculty.

Frequently Asked Questions

Students are invited to meet with their academic multiple times throughout the semester. Topics include course selection, registration help, navigating their college environment, academic success and progress, discussions on advising topics such as course sequencing, transfer credit, progress towards degree, and others.
This information can be found on Navigate. On the student’s main page, on the right toolbar, it will state who their academic advisor is.

Students are assigned to a First Year Advisor upon entering Ball State and keep that advisor for their entire first year. First Year Advisors are clustered by college and major, and students are assigned to an advisor based on their major. After they complete their first year at Ball State, students are assigned to a Major Advisor until graduation.

The exception to these assignments is Honors, Ball State Online and Student Athletic Support Services. These departments assign advisors within their own units.

Yes. Academic advisors complete “plans” in Stellic, Ball State’s course planning and degree audit platform. Early each semester academic advisors begin updating plans that include classes all the way to graduation. Students always have Stellic access and advisors often notify students when plan updates take place.
