Sixteen senior interior design students participated in designing the Oncology Center at IU Health Ball Memorial Hospital in Muncie, Indiana. They provided space planning and design for approximately 40,000 square feet on the 10th floor South Tower of the hospital to house the new center.
Fourteen senior students designed the interior of a newly leased building for Luther Consulting in Indianapolis. The students designed a new office space building of 2,500 square feet using Steelcase open office system. Designers and staff of Business Furniture and Steelcase participated in presentations and provided valuable practical information to the development of the project.
Sixteen students in Interior Design Studio 3 designed the library of Yorktown (Indiana) High School. Students visited and had several meetings the superintendent of Yorktown schools, the principal, and librarian. The discussions included functional and aesthetic issues of the current library and completed projects were presented by the students to the client.
Sixteen students designed the interior of Gethsemane United Methodist Church, a 15,000-square-foot, brand new building, in the process of design by the architect in Muncie, Indiana. The clients, the architect, contractor, and members of the church met with students numerous times at the site and at the Ball State campus to review the students’ concepts and schematic designs. Each team of four arrived at a design solution to carry the church mission and vision into the design and presented them with the final ideas.
Twelve students in the Programming class teamed up to conduct the feasibility study, research, and programming of 17,000 square feet for the American Health Network: Eye Center, Muncie, Indiana. In this course, students primarily gathered the client’s desires and needs and identified the functional and aesthetic issues by using surveys, questionnaires, observations, literature review, etc. This was translated into a written document that provided the community partner the foundation for the design.
Students in ID Studio 4 worked on the design of the interior of a 35,000-square-foot office building for Ontario Systems, a Muncie-based corporation that develops software. With assistance from Building Better Communities, a faculty member and a representative of Building Better Communities met with key personnel of Ontario Systems to tour the facility and discuss functional and aesthetic issues.
Twenty-two students in the Universal Design course engaged in design of the interior of the first and second floor of Easter Seals Crossroads Disability Services, Indianapolis. The major focus of this project was to make the building accessible to all users of the space.
Junior students worked on the design of the interior of a 15,000-square-foot office building for Muncie Star Press. The focus of this design was to create a flexible, collaborative, productive, and eco-friendly work space. The students developed floor plans and multiple realistic, 3-D renderings for the client to envision the design.
Junior students proposed a new design for the Pier and Backporch, a restaurant located in the Syracuse- based, Oakwood resort. The students spent a weekend at the resort in order to meet with staff and gain valuable knowledge to help guide their designs. The end result produced multiple design options that address flexibility, acoustics, and circulation.
Students in Interior Design Studio 3 designed the administrative areas of the Youth Opportunity Center (YOC) located in Muncie. Students met with staff to gain insight on current issues, such as privacy, circulation, and security. After addressing these issues in their designs, students presented plans and 3-D realistic images to the client.
