The Writing Program provides direction and support to the first-year writing courses and instructors at Ball State University. The program is recognized as one of the best Writing Programs in the country, receiving the Writing Program Certificate of Excellence from the national Conference on College Composition and Communication.

First-year writing is considered foundational for students making the transition from high school to college-level writing. At Ball State, first-year writing emphasizes the rhetorical nature of writing and reading, argumentation, multimodality, inquiry, and primary and secondary research.

Most Ball State students will take one of three tracks to meet their first-year writing requirement:

1. English 101 + English 102 + English 104

2. English 103 + English 104

3. English 114 (Honors students only)

All students with a high school GPA above 2.6 will take ENG 103 + ENG 104. Honors students with a high school GPA of 3.8 or higher may proceed immediately to ENG 114.

The Writing Program works closely with the Writing Center, a key component of writing support for students at Ball State. All students, whether enrolled in first-year writing or not, are able to get free one-to-one feedback on their writing at the center.
