Department Scholarships

At Ball State, 80 percent of our students are eligible for financial aid. The School of Earth, Atmosphere, and Sustainability offers several scholarships to help you pursue your bachelor’s degree.

Floy Hurlbut and Jim Leak Memorial Scholarship

This scholarship was created to provide funds to geography students. Jim Leak began this fund made in memory of the late Dr. Hurlbut who established the Muncie Travel Service in 1952. Dr. Hurlbut was also a professor of Geography at Ball State for many years. The scholarship name was later changed to include Jim Leak’s name due to his death in 1992. This award is based on your grade point average (GPA) and on your service to the department

Robert H and Esther L Cooper Science Student Award

To be eligible for this award, you shall use neither tobacco nor alcohol in any form, nor any illegal drug, and shall be of good moral character. The selection for the award is to be made on the quality of the person rather than financial need or scholastic ability.

Dr. Thomas P. and Mary Grimes Fund for Meteorology and Climatology Awards

Students are encouraged to apply for these awards, given each year. There is one for academic performance and one for service to meteorology.

Henry S. Kane, Sr. & Ottillie N. Kane Memorial Award Outstanding Junior

The Dr. Henry Kane Scholarship is a $1000 scholarship awarded to an outstanding junior pursuing a major in the Geological Sciences at Ball State University and the recipient must have at least a GPA of 3.0.

The recipient must:

be an outstanding junior in the Department of Geological Sciences
have a GPA of at least 3.0

Financial need is not considered.

Mark E. Corder Scholarship

The Mark E. Corder Scholarship Fund is awarded to an undergraduate geological sciences student who demonstrates financial need and is to be used solely for participation in undergraduate field courses or field research activities.

demonstrate financial need
participate in undergraduate field courses or field research activities

William C. Ade Award

The Geological Sciences Department annually schedules the proxy of the Area Concentration Achievement Tests for its undergraduate junior and senior students at no cost. The William C. Ade Prize is traditionally a $1000 prize awarded to the undergraduate who participates in the scheduled tests and receives the highest grade within the department. The tests are available to junior and senior undergraduate geology students.

be enrolled in the Department of Geological Sciences
achieve the highest score on the Area Concentration Achievement Test (ACAT) exam
can only be awarded once

This award is available to students of junior and senior undergraduate class standing.

Alan C. Samuelson Award Outstanding Senior

The Alan C. Samuelson Scholarship is a $1000 scholarship awarded to an outstanding senior pursuing a major in the Geological Sciences.

Harlan Roepke Field Studies Award

The Harlan Roepke Field Studies Award is a $1000 scholarship awarded to an undergraduate or graduate student(s) participating in a geology field studies program. The recipient is selected by either academic achievement or by financial need, although financial need is not required.

Consideration is given to both academic and financial need, although financial need is not required.

Award: Excellence in Earth History

The Excellence in Earth History Award is a non-monetary recognition given to the Geological Sciences major that receives the highest grade in GEOL 201 (Earth, Life, and Time) for the calendar year.

Criteria

The recipient must:

receive the top grade in GEOL 201 Earth, Life, and Time for the calendar year
pursue an undergraduate major in the department

Award: Excellence in Field Geology

The Excellence in Field Geology Award is a non-monetary recognition given to the Ball State University student that receives the highest grade in GEOL 383 (Geology Field Camp) the preceding summer.

Criteria

The recipient must:

be a Ball State University student
have the best performance in GEOL 383 Geology Field Camp the preceding summer

Natural Resources Scholarships

NREM Scholarship Application Forms are due by March 15 or the next business day. Submit them to the Department of Environment, Geology and Natural Resources, Fine Arts building, AR 117.

Clyde W. Hibbs Memorial Scholarship for Current Undergraduates

For students majoring in Natural Resources and Environmental Management. The Clyde W. Hibbs Memorial Scholarship is a legacy to the department's founder, Clyde W. Hibbs.

Award Amount

Typically, $1,000 to $2,000.

Criteria

Candidates must:

be current NREM majors
have at least a 3.0 overall GPA and a 3.2 GPA in NREM classes
have earned fewer than 60 credits by the end of the current spring semester
submit a 700-word essay describing their academic and career goals

Alex and Anna I. Nicoloff Scholarship for Environmental Studies

The Alex and Anna I. Nicoloff Scholarship for Environmental Studies is awarded in memory of the parents of Dorothy Nicoloff, who endowed the fund to support the scholarships.

Typically, $1,000 to $2,000.

Criteria

Candidates must:

have earned a minimum of 60 credits by the end of the current spring semester
be current NREM majors
have at least a 3.0 overall GPA and a 3.2 GPA in NREM classes
submit a 700-word essay describing your academic and career goals

Charles O. Mortensen Fellowship

The Charles O. Mortensen Fellowship offers a tuition fellowship for the academic year to a junior, senior, or graduate student within the NREM department

Award Amount

Typically, $500 to $1,000.

There is no GPA requirement, but preference is given to students with at least a 3.0 GPA

The Air and Waste Management Association Scholarship

The Air and Waste Management Association Scholarship is provided to NREM majors or minors.

Award Amount

Typically, $1,000.

Criteria

The recipient must:

be a U.S. citizen and Indiana resident
major in NREM or minor in environmental management
have a 3.0 GPA overall and in NREM
submit a 700-word essay describing your academic and career goals
Scholarship recipients will be recognized at the Air & Waste Management Association's annual conference. The EGNR department will cover the cost of attendance.

CITES Scholarship

The Center for Industry, Technology, and Environmental Sciences has offered $1,250 to NREM for providing a scholarship for students interested in Environmental Management.

Award Amount

Typically, $1,000 to $1,250.

Criteria

The recipient must:

be a U.S. citizen and Indiana resident
be a current NREM major
have at least a 3.0 overall GPA and a 3.2 GPA in NREM classes
be studying environmental science and interested in technical aspects of the field
submit a 700-word essay describing your academic and career goals is required
Scholarship recipients will be recognized at the CITIES Spring Symposium. The EGNR department will cover the cost of attendance.
