Title: "When may I be allowed to soar at my own pleasing?" Past and present in detainees' poetry at the Angel Island Immigration Station

During the years of the Chinese Exclusion Act (1882-1943), the United States imprisoned thousands of immigrants at the station on Angel Island. There, the detainees carved their hopes, fears, and anger into the walls in poems. Prof. Kathryn S. Gardiner will explore this poetry's roots in the Tang Dynasty, as well as its emotional echoes in the writings of detainees and immigrants throughout U.S. history.
