Defining US: Children at the Crossroads of Change
Wednesday, November 13, 2024, 5:30pm at the Multicultural Center’s Multipurpose Room
Defining US takes us inside the nation’s largest schools and shows the struggles, hopes, and dreams of marginalized students and educators fighting to rise above a divisive culture war over race and national identity that’s playing out in classrooms across the nation today.
Focusing on the role of education in helping to understand and improve issues of race, sexual orientation, gender identity, poverty, homelessness, and physical and mental differences, Defining US addresses our conflicting perceptions and attitudes about race, personhood, and truth. It tells the up close and personal stories of children of color who are now the majority of America’s youth, and the important role of education in counteracting harmful stereotypes and helping students discover their power, potential, and ability to lead us into the future. Educators share the unheard story of how they are teaching our children to better understand themselves and each other and what they all can teach US. Directed by Stacey DeWitt. Attend this screening as part of National Education Month.
The film is 1 hr 33 min long.
There will be a facilitated discussion following the film.
