IFC Fraternities

The following fraternities have chapters at Ball State and are governed by the Interfraternity Council.

Alpha Tau Omega, considered by many to be the first national fraternity, was founded on September 11, 1865 at Virginia Military Institute in Lexington, Virginia.

Alpha Tau Omega was formed because during and after the Civil War, families were torn apart, due to brothers fighting on opposite sides. Alpha Tau Omega was based upon a bond as strong as right itself and as lasting as humanity; to know no North, no South, no East, no West but to know man as man; to teach, not politics, but morals; to foster, not partisanship, but the recognition of true merit wherever found; to have no narrower limits within which to work together for the elevation of man than the outlines of the world.

Zeta Phi Beta, Incorporated was founded on the simple belief that sorority elitism and socializing should not overshadow the real mission for progressive organizations—to address societal mores, ills, prejudices, poverty, and health concerns of the day.

Founded January 16, 1920, Zeta began as an idea conceived by five coeds at Howard University in Washington D.C.: Arizona Cleaver, Myrtle Tyler, Viola Tyler, Fannie Pettie and Pearl Neal. These five women, also known as our Five Pearls, dared to depart from the traditional coalitions for black women and sought to establish a new organization predicated on the precepts of Scholarship, Service, Sisterly Love and Finer Womanhood.
