Gov. Mitch Daniels announced Jan. 24 the appointment of Richard Hall to the Ball State University Board of Trustees.

Hall is a partner at Barnes & Thornburg in the government services and finance department. He previously served as a law clerk to Judge Michael Kanne of the United States Court of Appeals.

In 1989, he received the prestigious Walter Byers Postgraduate Scholarship awarded by the NCAA each year to one male and one female athlete for academic excellence, athletic achievement and commitment to public service. 

Hall received his undergraduate degree from Ball State and his law degree from Northwestern University School of Law.

"Rick's leadership will be a great asset to Ball State as it continues to enhance its critical role in Indiana's economic growth," Daniels said.

Hall's appointment is effective immediately and will expire Dec. 31, 2010.

Ball State President Jo Ann M. Gora concurred in welcoming Hall at a critical time in the institution's history.

"Ball State is on the move and is quickly responding to the state's changing education and workforce needs," she said. "Rick's knowledge of finance and Indiana public policy and his commitment to his alma mater will be invaluable as we move forward."

Board of Trustees President Tom DeWeese also welcomed Hall.

"The Board of Trustees is extremely enthusiastic about the direction of the university," he said. "Ball State is on the move, and we are looking forward to capitalizing on Rick's expertise in advancing this great institution."

Hall will replace Richard Moake. Moake has served his alma mater for close to 40 years as a student, active alumnus and dedicated member of the trustees.

Of the many ways in which Moake has served Ball State, his insight and advice regarding major construction and renovations have been particularly instrumental in the short-term and long-term needs of the university.

During his tenure, Moake invested many hours and offered tremendous insight during the construction of Worthen Arena, the Art and Journalism Building, the Music Instruction Building, Shafer Tower and the McKinley Safety Improvement Project.

"The Ball State family owes a tremendous debt to Dick Moake for his commitment and the leadership he has provided in creating the vibrant institution that we are today," Gora said. "We look forward to continuing to gain from Dick's insights through his many contributions to the university."

At the recommendation of Ball State's Alumni Association, Daniels also reappointed DeWeese, president of the Board of Trustees for the past 11 years, to another term.

He earned his bachelor's degree in business in 1968 and his master's in 1969 from Ball State. His term will expire Dec. 31, 2010. 

DeWeese, a lawyer in Muncie, has served Ball State for more than 20 years as a member of the Alumni Council, Foundation Board of Directors, Board of Trustees and as president of the Board of Trustees.

"Tom's steadfast support of Ball State combined with his leadership as we advance Ball State in an exciting new direction have been critical to the institution," Gora said. "His understanding of Ball State and continued leadership will be crucial as we move forward."
