Ball State journalism professor Mark Popovich will be inducted into the Department of Journalism Hall of Fame during an awards program at 11:30 a.m. April 3 in the Pittenger Student Center, Cardinal Hall.

Popovich, former chairman of the journalism department at Ball State, has emerged as a prominent voice in media law through his defense of student media rights, research and active participation in university governance, according to Marilyn Weaver, journalism department chairwoman.

Alumnus Timothy Andrews also will be inducted. Weaver said Andrews pioneered electronic delivery of news at Dow Jones & Company and has served as head of magazine publisher Primedia and the Advertising Specialty Institute.

In addition, the department will recognize 10 other award recipients, including:

  • Eugene S. Pulliam National Journalism Writing Award - Janet Kelley, staff reporter, Lancaster (Pa.) New Era
  • Indiana Journalism Award - Dennis Ryerson, Indianapolis Star
  • Indiana Scholastic Journalism Award - Student Press Law Center, Arlington, Va.
  • Journalism Alumnus Award - Bernie Kohn, assistant managing editor, The Baltimore Sun
  • Outstanding Young Alumnus Award - Rachel Allen, Burson-Marsteller Public Relations, San Francisco, and Scott Navarro, agency relations manager, Microsoft Digital Advertising Solution
  • Joseph Costa Award for Courtroom Photography - Mark Hertzberg, director of photography, The Journal Times, Racine, Wis.
  • Anton Majeri Jr. Award for Innovation and Leadership in Graphic Journalism - Nigel Holmes, founder, Explanation Graphics
  • National Public Relations Achievement Award - Robert W. Grupp, vice president of corporate and public Affairs at Cephalon, Inc., Frazer, Pa.
  • Special Citation - Dennis Cripe, former executive director, Indiana High School Press Association, Franklin, Ind.
