A scholarship has been established in the name of Mir Masoom Ali, George and Frances Ball distinguished professor emeritus of statistics and professor emeritus of mathematical sciences. With additional contributions from other donors, Ali's children created the fund to honor their father and his lifelong commitment to academics. 

Ali founded the graduate program in statistics at Ball State in 1971, where he served as the director until his retirement in June 2007. In recognition of Ali's excellence in teaching, research and professional service, he received the 1992-93 Outstanding Faculty Award and the 1985 Outstanding Researcher Award from Ball State.   

In 2002, he received the Sagamore of the Wabash, the highest award given in the state of Indiana, from the governor of Indiana for his significant contributions to Ball State, to higher education in the state of Indiana and to the statistics profession. He was the first recipient of the Qazi Motahar Husain Gold Medal in 1990 and was the recipient of the Islamic Countries Society of Statistical Sciences (ISOSS) Gold Medal in 2005. 

Ali is the founding president of the North America Bangladesh Statistical Association (NABSA). He is a fellow of the American Statistical Association, Institute of Statisticians, Royal Statistical Society and Bangladesh Academy of Sciences. He is also an elected member of the International Statistical Institute. 

He has served as an editor and associate editor of international statistical journals published in Bangladesh, India, Pakistan and South Korea. Ali's research has been published extensively throughout many professional statistical journals. The International Journal of Statistical Sciences published a special volume in honor of Ali's 70th birthday.

The purpose of the Dr. Mir Massoom Ali Scholarship is to provide financial support for scholarships and programs for graduate students studying statistics in the Department of Mathematical Sciences.
