Darrell Wible, a celebrated professor emeritus of telecommunications at Ball State University, has created a scholarship assisting nursing majors in honor of his late wife, Evelyn Reynolds Wible.
The Evelyn Reynolds Wible Endowed Nursing Scholarship will be made available to senior nursing students with an interest in theory and practice in medical and surgical nursing. Wible established the scholarship fund with a $100,000 gift.
Evelyn Wible was born in Kentucky and married Darrell Wible in Terre Haute in 1954. In 1959, she applied for admission to the Union Hospital School of Nursing, where she attended classes in addition to studying at Indiana State University. In 1963, she became a graduate nurse with honors and received the Medical Surgical Nursing Award. After taking a position as a graduate nurse at Ohio State University Hospital, Evelyn Wible took her state board exams and became a licensed registered nurse in Indiana, Ohio and Kentucky. In 1966, she and her husband moved to Muncie.
Darrell Wible, a pioneer in Indiana broadcasting and a member of the Indiana Broadcasters Pioneers Hall of Fame taught for 25 years at Ball State. His two major careers and experiences are chronicled in "Memories of an Indiana Broadcaster" and "The Letterman Gang."
When reflecting on the life he and Evelyn shared, Darrell Wible said he wondered, "How did I do all that?" And the answer was always, "Not without her."
Eligible candidates for the Evelyn Reynolds Wible Scholarship must have at least one full year of schooling remaining and have demonstrated scholastic achievements within the nursing curriculum. The recipients may have demonstrated financial need as determined by the scholarship selection committee. To the extent possible, awards will be the equivalent of tuition and fees, books, room and board, and other necessary expenses.
