The melodic sounds of Flamenco-inspired music will fill the air beginning at 5:30 p.m. March 25 at Ball State University's Pruis Hall. Double bassist Renaud Garcia-Fons and two other musicians will travel all the way from France to perform at Ball State. Beginning its tour in the United States, the trio is well known in France, Italy and Portugal.

The public is invited to enjoy a free show filled with a rich tapestry of ethnic-influenced instrumental music sponsored by the Sursa Guest Artist Fund. Performing with Garcia-Fons are Kiko Ruiz, an accomplished Flamenco guitarist, and Pascal Rolland, a world-renowned percussionist.

"At a performance for the International Society of Bassist Convention, Renaud received a standing ovation after his first piece," said Hans Sturm, a Ball State professor of music. "The audience will be swept away by the tempo and talent of Renaud, Pascal and Kiko."

The trio is on an exclusive tour of the United States, making only four stops throughout the country. Sturm travels to Paris to take music lessons from the same teacher who taught Fons. Having a personal history with Garcia-Fons, Sturm made the arrangements for this highly esteemed musician to perform for Ball State students.

"Renaud plays in a Flamenco style but also has Middle Eastern and jazz influences," Sturm said. "The trio's music is influenced by but is not classical — more of an ethnic jam band playing at the highest level."

Pruis will open its doors for the concert at 5:20 p.m. Students do not need to bring an ID to be admitted.
