Ball State alumna Mary Elizabeth Steiner Babcock has given more than $49,000 to the Ball State University Foundation for the creation of a scholarship in her name.
The Mary Elizabeth Steiner Scholarship is for an incoming freshman majoring in elementary education. The award recognizes Steiner's dedicated career to the teaching profession.
A graduate of Hartford Township High School, Steiner earned her bachelor's and master's degrees at Ball State. She taught at a one-room school in French Township for two years, in Petroleum for seven years, in Portland for 18 years and in Bluffton for the last 16 years of her career. She died May 22, 2008, in Bluffton.
She was listed in the first edition of Who's Who Among America's Teachers. Steiner was a member of the Wells County, Jay County and Indiana Retired Teachers Association. Steiner volunteered many hours at the Wells Community Hospital and Caylor-Nickel Medical Center, and she enjoyed traveling, quilting and needlepoint.
Recipients of the Mary Elizabeth Steiner Scholarship must be graduates of Bluffton High School and in the top 20 percent of their class or have an overall grade point average of a C or better. Availability of the scholarship is dependent upon an award selection process established by Ball State and its academic departments.
