Niel C. and Karen M. Ellerbrook have committed $250,000 to Ball State University to create a scholarship fund for accounting students in honor of Joseph W. Jackson, professor emeritus of accounting.
While attending Ball State, Ellerbrook was a student of Jackson's. Ellerbrook received his bachelor's degree in accounting from Ball State in 1970. Throughout his career, Ellerbrook has served numerous organizations in leadership roles and is involved in numerous education initiatives and activities.
Ellerbrook retired from Vectren Corp. in 2010 after 30 years of service in the energy industry, the last 10 years of which he had served as CEO of the company. Prior to his election as Vectren's first CEO in 2000, the Indiana native served in a number of positions, including vice president of finance, chief financial officer, senior vice president, executive vice president, president of Indiana Gas Co. Inc., and president and chief operating officer of Indiana Energy, Inc. He was one of the architects who not only brought Vectren to fruition but also developed its strong nonregulated portfolio of companies and investments.
Availability of the Niel C. and Karen M. Ellerbrook Accounting Scholarship in Honor of Joseph W. Jackson is dependent upon an awards selection process established by Ball State and its academic departments. The fund was created to assist high ability students pursuing a degree in accounting.
