A number of national experts will discuss the rapid changes in technology and the marketplace that impact both the regulatory process and consumers during a conference on Thursday, Sept. 15, at Ball State University.
"Empowering America: Broadband's Role in Growing the Economy" is the topic for the 2011 edition of the Digital Policy Institute's (DPI) annual policy forum, beginning at 9 a.m. at Ball State's Alumni Center, 2800 W. Bethel Ave.
Scheduled participants include moderator Stuart Brotman, president of Stuart N. Brotman Communications and a faculty member at Harvard Law School; Kelley Dunne, chief executive officer of One Economy; Bruce Mehlman, chairman of Internet Innovation Alliance and former assistant U.S. secretary of commerce; and Larry Landis, commissioner of the Indiana Utility Regulatory Commission.
Topics for the discussion include the state of the telecom industry, antitrust issues, competitive implications for industry and urban/rural consumers, and the economic impact of deregulation.
Since its creation at Ball State in 2004, DPI has been instrumental in addressing the most pressing digital policy questions facing state and federal regulators in the digital age and fostering critical thinking across disciplines on national and international policy issues.
DPI supports faculty research in areas of law, regulation, public policy, economics and technology as they relate to local, state, national and international concerns.
The conference is sponsored by DPI and the Internet Innovation Alliance (IIA), a broad-based coalition of business and nonprofit organizations that aim to ensure every American, regardless of race, income or geography, has access to the broadband Internet.
